Kathak

Through Kathak, we aim to instill in our students not just dance skills, but also discipline, cultural awareness, and the ability to express emotions through movement.

Why We Offer This Subject
Kathak dance is more than a performing art it’s a vibrant blend of culture, discipline, storytelling, and self-expression. Learning Kathak connects students to their roots and rich heritage, while teaching them to convey emotions and ideas without words. Beyond cultural value, it serves as a joyful outlet for stress, fostering creativity, confidence, and emotional well-being.

Curriculum Timeline

June-July

Basic Posture & Footwork

Introduction to Kathak posture, basic hand gestures (mudras), and foundational footwork (tatkar) with simple rhythmic patterns.

August-September

Rhythmic Development

Focus on Rangmanch Pranam, Bhumi Pranam, teen taal (16-beat rhythm cycle), simple pirouettes (chakkar), and introduction to storytelling through expressions (abhinaya).

October-November

Technical Compositions

Introduction to abhinaya (expression) and storytelling aspects of Kathak. Students learn to convey emotions and narratives through facial expressions and gestures, along with practice of toda–tukda.

December-January

Dance Sequences

Learning set compositions including tukras, tihais, and paran. Students develop speed, precision, and fluency in their movements and footwork, along with Abhinaya geet (अभिनय-गीत) – ‘कौन रंग डारी खेली श्याम’.

February-March

Performance Preparation

Refinement of learned techniques and preparation for end-of-year performance. Students work on complete choreographic pieces that showcase their skills, including Guru Vandana and Saraswati Vandana.
